It was a revelation so simple. If aloe vera could work such wonders on the outside of the human body (helping to heal cuts and burns), what might it do from the inside? What role might this unique plant play in the world of science and wellness? What doors could this mysterious key unlock?

The decision was made to find out, and in the early 1980s a research team was employed to identify and isolate the plant’s beneficial ingredient. Using state-of-the-art analytical equipment, they experimented with and studied aloe vera until an amazing discovery was made. What these researchers found far exceeded their expectations.

A long-chain carbohydrate—a complex sugar consisting of mostly mannose—was the key. To understand the role of mannose, the scientists started at the beginning—with the basic building block of the body: the human cell. Soon, they discovered that the outer structures of cells are covered with hundreds of long-chain carbohydrates.

Next, they discovered that our cells communicate through cell-surface carbohydrates, or sugars. Our cells use only a few of these vital sugars like letters of an alphabet to create cellular words. It turned out that the primary sugar used in these cellular words is the main sugar in aloe vera gel—mannose.
